The National Park Service has thousands of dedicated employees, doing hundreds of different jobs, and all working to “conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.” Most folks assume they are all rangers. Those are the folks they meet manning the gates, giving the campfire talks and on patrol in the parks. However, rangers only make up a fraction of the Park Service’s staff. There are biologists, janitors, historians, electricians, clerks, architects, snowplow operators, purchasing agents and dozens of other professions all to maintain and manage our National Parks.
Chuck described his career as a Park Ranger in The Making of a Ranger. He finished that book as he changed direction within the NPS. He became an apprentice carpenter at the ripe old age of 37. Chuck and his fellow tradesmen maintain the homes the rangers live in. They keep up the visitor centers and the other public buildings and facilities the visitors use. Sometimes they build new things and often their work is to preserve old things. While their work is on display everywhere, they work behind the scenes, so here is a look into the life and work of a tradesman in the National Park Service.
